Halden Prison

Halden Prison in Østfold is a high-security facility that houses 250 of Norways toughest inmates. Besides that, it’s probably the most humane and the best designed prison ever. Designed not only to be pretty, but also to get criminals out through the front door as soon as possible. According to a The New York Times Magazine article a year at Halden costs $ 93 000 (vs. $ 31 000 in the US). Sounds like a lot, but seems much less if you see what they accomplish. The architecture was done by the Danish Erik Møller Architects and the UK based HLM Architects. The impressive ‘street-art’ is by the hand of Dolk.

Train station art

Graffiti gets more and more popular, but sadly also stays neglected by so called serious art historians. In Antwerp Berchem train station they did a good job by letting two complete walls of one platform painted. It certainly makes my occasional train ride a lot more attractive…
